WaterWork Plumbing: hydrojetting for Grosse Pointe’s historic lakefront homes
Grosse Pointe is one of the oldest communities in the Midwest. The area was settled back in the 1600s, the Village of Grosse Pointe incorporated in 1879, and it became a City in 1934. Along the way it grew into a lakefront enclave of architecturally significant estates and well-built older homes, many of them now a century or more old. Those homes are beautiful, and the clay tile and cast iron sewer laterals running under them have been in the ground for generations. We’ve cameraed enough of them to know what’s down there: joints loosened by decades of freeze-thaw, cast iron scaled thick, and tree roots from the mature canopy growing in through the cracks.
Sitting right on Lake St. Clair adds a challenge most inland cities don’t have. The water table near the lake is high, the ground stays saturated, and the city can’t simply divert excess stormwater into the lake to relieve the system. Grosse Pointe also runs on a combined sewer that carries sewage and stormwater in the same pipes, and that flow depends on the Conner Creek Pump Station to move it toward treatment. When that system is stressed, basements pay the price. Pump and capacity problems flooded around 200 homes during the August 2016 storm, and again across the area in June 2021. The city has since secured a federally funded grant of more than $21 million to start separating its combined sewer and reduce these backups.
All of that infrastructure work happens out in the street. It does nothing for your house if your own lateral is partially blocked when the ground is full of water. A standard drain snake punches a hole through a clog and leaves the rest coating the walls, so it returns. WaterWork’s hydrojetting strips the line back to close to its original diameter, which is the capacity an older Grosse Pointe lateral needs when the system is under pressure. Because so many homes here have aging clay and cast iron, we camera the line first and set our pressure to match what the pipe can safely take.
