WaterWork Plumbing: hydrojetting for Eastpointe’s postwar sewer lines
Eastpointe filled in fast after World War II. The city you know as East Detroit until the 1992 name change built most of its housing between the 1920s and the 1950s, the classic two- and three-bedroom postwar homes packed onto tight lots northeast of the Detroit line. Those homes have held up well, but the clay tile and cast iron sewer laterals running out to the street are now 60 to 100 years old. We’ve cameraed enough of them to know what’s down there: joints loosened by decades of freeze-thaw, cast iron walls thick with scale, and tree roots growing in through the cracks
Roots are the leading cause of sewer line trouble in this part of Southeast Michigan, and Eastpointe’s older clay and cast iron pipe gives them plenty of openings. Once a root finds a joint, it keeps coming back, catching grease and sediment until a line that drained fine for years turns into a slow drain and then a full backup.
The bigger picture matters here too. Eastpointe runs on a combined sewer system, where stormwater and sanitary sewage share the same pipes, and that flow is carried through an 11-foot interceptor down to the Chapaton Pump Station and retention basin at Nine Mile Road before it reaches the regional treatment plant. When a big storm hits, the system fills fast, which is exactly what happened in the June and July 2021 floods that put water in basements across Eastpointe and its neighbors. The county has been investing heavily to keep up, including a $29 million Chapaton project completed in 2024 that raised the system’s storage capacity. But none of that protects your house if your own lateral is partially blocked. A standard drain snake punches a hole through a clog and leaves the rest coating the walls, so it returns. WaterWork’s hydrojetting strips the line back to close to its original diameter, which is the capacity an older Eastpointe lateral needs when the combined sewer is under pressure.
