Backflow Prevention and Certification for Detroit Properties
WaterWork Plumbing provides backflow testing in Detroit for homes, rental properties, restaurants and commercial buildings. Detroit’s Water and Sewerage Department runs a cross-connection program that both State of Michigan law and city ordinance require. Its job is to find places where sewage or chemicals could flow back into the city’s drinking water, and to make sure the right backflow preventer is protecting each one.
DWSD’s Cross-Connection Inspections
DWSD has hired HydroCorp to carry out free cross-connection inspections inside and outside Detroit homes and businesses. Inspectors look for common hazards like:
- A garden hose with a chemical sprayer attached
- A washing machine hose submerged in a laundry tub
- A boiler that could push water back into the supply when pressure drops
- A lawn sprinkler system that could pull in fertilizer and soil
For simple hazards like hose connections, DWSD gives you free vacuum breakers, but you are responsible for installing any device the inspection calls for. When the fix is a testable assembly, such as a reduced pressure zone (RPZ) valve, a double check valve or a pressure vacuum breaker, it needs a plumber to install and test it. To schedule a DWSD inspection, call 313-343-1768.
Testing That Meets Michigan Rules
In Michigan, backflow test results are only valid when the tester holds an active ASSE 5110 certification and is a licensed plumber (or an apprentice working under one). Assemblies are tested when installed, after any repair, and on the schedule the water system sets. When we test your device, we:
- Record its make, model, serial number, size and location
- Test each check valve and relief valve with a calibrated gauge kit
- Repair or rebuild a failed device and retest it
- Give you the documentation for your records
Detroit Buildings With the Most Backflow Devices
Restaurants, laundromats, medical and dental offices, multi-unit rentals, and any building with a boiler, fire sprinkler line or irrigation system typically has at least one testable assembly. For general information on how backflow preventers work, see our backflow testing page.

Detroit Backflow FAQ
Is the DWSD cross-connection inspection really free?
Yes. DWSD pays for the inspection, and for common hazards like garden hose connections, the inspector provides free backflow prevention devices. You are responsible for installing any device the inspection calls for. Testable assemblies on boilers, sprinkler systems or commercial equipment need a licensed plumber.
How do I know the inspector is legitimate?
DWSD’s contractor is HydroCorp, and its inspectors carry a name badge with the DWSD logo. If you’re unsure, call DWSD’s scheduling line at 313-343-1768 to confirm or book your appointment directly.
What happens if my backflow preventer fails the test?
A failed test usually means a worn check valve, seal or relief valve. We can rebuild or replace the assembly, retest it the same visit when parts are on hand, and give you the documentation showing it passed.
