Sewer Line Video Inspection for Detroit Homes
WaterWork Plumbing provides sewer camera inspection in Detroit for homeowners, buyers, landlords and businesses. Most Detroit houses drain through a private sewer line that runs out to a city sewer in the alley or street, and the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department’s own data says about one in three of those private connections is clogged, offset or completely disconnected from the city tap. DWSD is repairing thousands of them through its Alley Sewer Repair Program, but a camera is the only way to know which group your house is in without digging.
What We Find in Detroit Sewer Lines
- Failed connections at the alley sewer. The point where your line meets the city sewer is often the deepest and most expensive part to repair, and the most common place for a line to separate.
- Root intrusion. Old clay joints and mature street trees are a bad combination.
- Cracked and collapsed clay or cast iron. In homes that are 60 to 90 years old, this is normal wear, not bad luck.
- Bellies and offsets. Sections that have sunk or shifted and now hold sewage.
When to Schedule an Inspection
- Before you buy. A sewer repair can easily cost more than $10,000 in Detroit, so the inspection is cheap protection.
- After repeated backups. If the same drain keeps clogging, something in the line is causing it.
- Before any dig. See the footage before you agree to excavation.
- Before a backwater valve goes in. The valve only works if the lateral is in sound condition, and DWSD checks the line with a camera before it installs one.
How It Works
- Access: we enter through a cleanout or other access point in the basement.
- Record: a waterproof camera travels the line and records everything it sees.
- Locate: a locator on the camera head marks the depth and position of any problem from above ground.
- Explain: you get the footage and a plain-English explanation of what it shows and what it will take to fix.
If repair is needed, we can clean the line with hydro jetting in Detroit or handle main sewer line repair and replacement.
