What Does Backflow Mean?
Backflow occurs when the water in a plumbing system’s supply line flows in the opposite direction. Essentially, rather than flowing into the system, the water flows out of it. This is problematic as it can result in contamination of the public water supply (by harmful chemicals, human waste, etc.)
This is caused by a change in pressure within the pipes. To prevent backflow from happening, a backflow prevention device is used.
What Is a Backflow Prevention Device?
A backflow prevention device can be thought of as a one-way gate. It allows water to enter into a plumbing system but blocks it from moving in the opposite direction (i.e. back into the public water supply).
In order to ensure that the device is working properly and protecting the public water supply, regular tests must be carried out.
What Is Involved in the Backflow Testing Process?
One of our certified backflow testers will determine whether or not your backflow prevention device is up to code. Our plumbers in University District will also test to see if your plumbing system is experiencing any backflow.
A special backflow testing kit is connected to the device to check if there is any change in pressure and, if there is backflow, determine what the issue is.
